ISLAM AND ISLAMIC UMMAH

Author: Ismail Nizam
Islam is not a religion, but is a Din. Islam is one and the only Din accepted by our Creator and Sustainer, Allah. Islam Din is a complete way of life, which comprises the guidlines for all human affairs. This is the real perspective we must always believe in terms of Islam. That is, there is no other Din anywhere on this planet. Anyone or any group of human who follows any other way of life will face failure today or the hereafter.

Understaing and regarding Islam as a complete way of life allows us to define Islam Din as a comprehensive and a holistic system that would ensure success in this world and the world hereafter. The belief "Islam is a complete system" oblige you to reject some of the wide spread understandings among Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Many people today believe or think that Islam is an alternative religion and Islam has to be accepted within the Western perspective of religious pluralism.

However, the point to be remembered is that the Islam Din is not an alternative, but the only way of life (system) that is acceptable and this Din is the only system that ensures success. Keeping this view in mind, we cannot accept the view that Islam is to be practised within the four walls of the mosque, or during certain occasions like Ramdan and Hajj. Islam must be the way in all human affairs.

The key success factors of any society in the 21st Century are the stability and sustainability of the economic system (the economy), the ethical and value system within the society, the political well-being (political system), and the system of education. The challenge to humanity in general and Muslims in particular is to formulate strategies to systemize the four success factors within the framework of Islamic teachings.

Following a comprehensive and a holistic approach to give Islam its due role in all human affairs is the only wall that keeps us away from success.
